Everything You Need To Know About CBD For Pets

Everything You Need To Know About CBD For Pets

Cannabidiol is also known as CBD, is one of the more than 100 cannabinoids present in the Cannabaceae family. CBD products are said to deliver their effects by boosting the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a system of unique signalling pathways that control the functions of the peripheral and nervous systems. The endocannabinoid system is present in all mammals. CBD has numerous applications, many of which are trending, including pet care. Pet owners are beginning to use CBD products to elicit several beneficial effects more than ever before. Why is this?

Endocannabinoids are chemical compounds produced naturally in our bodies and are known as phytocannabinoids when present in plants. It’s like a key-to-lock system, where phytocannabinoids are consumed by the body to fit into the cannabinoid receptors and cause a chain reaction to execute a certain result. CBD comes in many forms, some edible, others that can be smoked or used on the body topically like lotions or creams. One of the most prominent and discrete ways of consuming is CBD oil. Infused oils are made by extracting CBD from the plant, then diluting it with a carrier oil like MCT, coconut or hemp seed oil. This is why it may be appealing for pet owners to use CBD oils for their pates ailments, symptoms or health conditions.

There are many methods to extracting cannabinoids like CBD from the plant to apply into products for consumption or application. Using chemical compounds to add and strip the cannabinoids from the plant leaving a high potency residue as the final result. Solvents used can vary from hexane, CO2, and butane. CO2 is one of the most prominently used because it works in low temperatures and strips away remaining chlorophyll on the plant’s surface. These “concentrates” will then be added into a base oil carrier to create a shelf-ready product. Alternatively, there are natural solvents like Olive oil used to extract CBD oil safely. Please check with the manufacturer to know which solvent is used to extract your CBD oil for dogs & cats.

First off, always speak with your vet. Know what your options are and how to best source your products with professional assistance. Studies suggest that phytocannabinoids may be beneficial for several issues, such as seizures, arthritis, anxiety, inflammation, and nausea. Your product formula should be 100% natural and independently tested to ensure quality, purity, and effectiveness. Do your research and make sure that the CBD oil you give to your pet is:

  •   For pets, avoid flavorings (no chocolate in dog CBD oils) and other additives only suitable for humans.
  •   Doesn’t contain harmful pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
  •   Is independently tested (to make sure it meets quality standards or there is a Certificate of Analysis available for you to view).
  •   Contains the desired potency of CBD
  •   Allows you to accurately adjust the dose as needed

  1.     Apply the drops using a dropper with plastic instead of glass just in case your pet bites down.
  2.     Apply the drops directly to the middle of the tongue or back of the cheek/gum line.
  3.     Apply the drops to a treat or meal.
  4.     Apply the drops to the water bowl (use this as a last resort because the oil drop could get splashed out of the bowl).
  5. Mix in with peanut butter or your pet’s favourite snack.

Administering CBD oil for pets can be quite tricky as different pets react to other products. However, when selecting CBD oils, it’s essential to consider the affordability, edibility, composition of the product, and general taste.

Natural CBD oil is the most versatile option because the natural flavor is the most neutral. You can’t go wrong when you choose raw CBD because it keeps all the options open and straightforward. Some pet owners prefer hemp-derived products. Not only can it be administered sublingually, but you can also add natural CBD oil to your pet’s favorite recipes for a delicious kick.

Citrus CBD oil is another versatile flavor you can use for just about anything in your pet’s doses. Pets love the citrus CBD oil because of its tart taste but double-check that the ingredients are safe for your pet with their veterinarian.

CBD as a supplement is a healthy option for pets. Make sure to get your pets a high-quality CBD oil free of THC and chemicals (such as additives, flavors, and pesticides). Research or consult an expert to adjust the dosage to your pet’s weight and start low to reduce the risk of side effects
