How veterans can get reimbursed for medical cannabis

While access to online medical cannabis is increasing due to telemedicine platforms that make getting a Medical Document hassle-free (and from the comfort of your own home), we recognize that finances can hinder patients’ ability to purchase cannabis.

While there are some systems in place to help ease the burden of purchasing your cannabis, such as our Compassionate Pricing Program as well as claiming medical cannabis on your tax return, we also work with Veteran’s Affairs Canada (VAC) to help cover some of the cost of veterans’ medicine. Here’s how:

VAC covers up to a maximum of $8.50 per gram, which applies to both oil and dried flower. For qualifying veterans, we cover the remaining cost per gram. VAC also covers up to $300 every three years towards the purchase of a vaporizer. Oil cartridges and vape pens are covered as well, but only on an individual approval by Medavie Blue Cross.

Sounds pretty good, right?

Here are the steps for veterans to become eligible for medical cannabis reimbursement:

  1. Veterans can apply for their Medical Document from NamasteMD in three easy steps. They’ll need to provide their K number from Medavie Blue Cross to their NamasteMD nurse practitioner, who will put it on their Document once approved. Those who already have a Document can skip straight to step 2.
  2. Once veterans have received approval for their Medical Document, they can then sign up with their License Producer (LP) of choice, such as CannMart. When creating an account with CannMart, veterans must complete the step that asks whether or not the patient is a veteran. Once the account is created,  we will fax the patient’s documents to Medavie Blue Cross to confirm approval of eligibility for reimbursement. This process normally takes approximately 30 days.
  3. Once approved, we notify the veteran and they may begin placing their orders for medical cannabis. All orders are shipped using Canada Post, Purolator or Same Day Shipping for those in the GTA with Pineapple Express at no cost.
