How to make your own cannabis simple syrup

Infuse cannabis into drinks like coffee, cold brew, tea, iced drinks, lemonade and smoothies with this cannabis simple syrup recipe.


Simple syrup is a 1:1 water and sugar mixture, and this infused version is the perfect sweetening agent for drinks and dessert recipes. Since simple syrup blends better than regular granulated sugar in cold drinks, it’s a great option to add into mocktails or iced coffee. You can also drizzle it on top of your favourite meals for that extra sweet kick, like pancakes, waffles, granola, yogurt or warm winter drinks like apple cider and hot chocolate.


Syrup and water might be the most versatile and simple option, however, there are many different flavouring infusions to try. You can try adding cinnamon, lemon, lime, honey, or fresh ginger to your concoction to make it more personalized to your taste (or recipe).  Below are two recipe options for your cannabis simple syrup: one option uses pre-infused oils, and the other requires decarbing the cannabis flower and creating the oil yourself. 

 

 

Cannabis simple syrup recipe using pre-made oil


This easy recipe is versatile, quick to make, and requires very little work! You’ll use a pre-made oil, and the finished product should last approximately three weeks in the fridge.


Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook tIme: 10 - 15 minutes

Total time: 15 - 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1g (1000mg) of CBD Oil or THC Oil. You can opt for less for the first time if you’d like a lower potency.

Equipment:

  • Medium-sized pot or saucepan
  • Measuring cup
  • Spatula
  • Funnel
  • Spoon
  • Container or jar for storing completed syrup

Instructions:

  1. Combine the water and sugar in your pot or saucepan. Cook on medium to high heat and bring it to a boil. Stir with the spatula occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  2. Turn off heat and remove from stovetop to cool slightly.
  3. Add the desired amount of oil to your empty jar or container.
  4. Using the funnel, carefully add your simple syrup to your container. Be very careful not to burn yourself!
  5. Mix your cannabis oil into the syrup until it’s completely combined.
  6. Leave the lid off the jar until the syrup has almost cooled.
  7. Put the lid on and store in the fridge, or add your finished syrup to a recipe!

Note* Always shake well before each and every use, and properly label your container!


Cannabis simple syrup recipe using homemade cannabis oil: 


This recipe allows you to create your own oil from scratch by boiling the cannabis flower of your choice. This version of the cannabis simple syrup requires a few more ingredients, a careful eye on the temperature, and a bit more time. The completed recipe should last approximately three weeks in the fridge.


Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook tIme: 30 - 45 minutes

Total time: 35 - 50 minutes

Ingredients:

Equipment:

  • Medium-sized pot or saucepan
  • Measuring cup
  • Spatula
  • Thermometer
  • Bowl
  • Strainer
  • Cheesecloth or nut milk bag

Instructions:

  1. Bring the water to a boil on medium heat.
  2. Slowly add in the cannabis. Stir frequently.
  3. Add in the sugar, stirring until it has completely dissolved.
  4. Turn the heat down to low. Cover the cannabis flower and let it cook in the sugar water for 20 minutes. 
  5. Remove the lid and add in the glycerine.
  6. Turn the head back up to medium, stirring constantly for 7 - 8 minutes until it starts to bubble slightly. Ensure that the temperature never goes over 250° F or boils over and onto the stovetop element! 
  7. Once the mixture has thickened, remove from the heat and let cool. 
  8. Once cooled, carefully strain the mixture through the cheesecloth and strainer, into a bowl.
  9. Once the mixture has completely strained, use a funnel to carefully transfer your syrup to a container.  Remove the cheesecloth from the strainer, using gloves if the syrup is still warm (it should not be hot), and squeeze any remaining syrup into the bowl.
  10. Once completely cooled, put the lid on and store in the fridge, or add your finished syrup to a recipe!
